Promotions Are Not Based on Past Performance

Promotions are filling a gap by the organization that has a need for future performance. Leaders are looking for the best solution to solve a need. They are not going to promote you based on past performance but rather on how you would be expected to fill the next assignment.

We think promotions are a reward for our good work. They are not. Good work is rewarded with bonuses and salary increases and other perks, like parking spaces.

To get the next bump in your career:

1. Learn the skills of the next position you want to fill. Your current skills may not be enough even if you are performing admirably.

2. Do not be irreplaceable. This is a death sentence. If you have made yourself the only person who can serve your function, they cannot remove you without disruption. Write documents so others know what you are doing, train someone who can fill your shoes.

3. Train others on how to do your job, theirs, or special skills. Training is a promotable skill, and it becomes more important, not less, as you rise up in the org chart."

4. Understand what skills will be needed in the future. Anticipate your organization’s future needs, obtain those skills on your own, and then offer them when your employer needs them? AI is certainly one of them.

5. Understand who has the power to provide resources, information, budgets, and promotions. Get to know them and offer services if they are needed. Don't go around your boss or ask their permission if necessary.

6. Learn continuously. Take courses, attend networking events, observe trends, understand your industry, know what's happening in the world, learn technologies, learn leadership skills, and become an entrepreneurial thinker.

7. Be a Problem Solver. Every organization needs problems solved in every department. Look for ways processes can be improved and approach your boss with ideas. Volunteer to lead the solution committee.
