Leadership skills lead to Promotion. Every organization has the need to fill leadership gaps because of change, growth, and succession. A progressive organization should be training for promotions, but many often look to the outside. 


Job applicants for leadership roles have dressed up resumes that point to their skills and experience. It is important that employees have the same resume known by their superiors that says they are just as ready for the opportunity.


In addition to your job description, you want to demonstrate potential for more responsibility and autonomy. You want to be an expert at what you do, but show you have skills for future roles. Continuous learning is a start. 

Human Resource Directors say those with Executive Presence move up quicker. This is the aura of authority, confidence, and self-control. That entails communications, body language, and communication skills. Add emotional regulation, empathy, and decisiveness and you are creating a positive personal brand for leadership. 


It is important to both do good work and promote your contribution to superiors. Network vertically for mentorship, sponsorship, and feedback. Create a support team. Let them know of your ambitions and willingness to contribute. 


You have the advantage over applicants in that you know the company culture, processes, history, successes, failures, and future needs. People should know that you know. 


Finally, volunteer for leadership opportunities of leading projects, committees, and problem-solving sessions. Be the "go to person" when help or support is needed.
