We might find ourselves at a crossroads of deciding whether to continue in a non-productive path or start over. There are axioms about this situation. I say you never fail if you never quit. Tony Robbins says if you don't succeed try a new strategy. If these don't work, then let's talk about starting over.
This can be approached in the same manner global organizations often tackle their problems. Rather than just dive into a problem, they start with a Vision of how things would be if the problem didn't exist. So, start with your Vision of how you want your Career or Work to be. Visualize your lifestyle in these same circumstances. Might as well have the whole package.
Next, the problem we find ourselves in probably has some root causes. What went wrong? Did our strengths or weaknesses have an effect? Did we burnout because we didn't engage in self-care practices? Were we in a toxic environment because we didn't investigate first? Were we micro-managed by a boss that didn't hire us?
Next, we want to list all our options. Just as we should spend as much time as necessary to find the root causes, we should spend as much time as necessary to list our options. Do we need to engage in personal development? Do we need leadership skills? Do we need specific skill training? Do we need a healthier work environment? Do we need a coach? Are there mentors or sponsors with whom we could consult?
When we have our best options, we should set the Plan for strategy. What is the long-term strategy? What are the medium- and short-term strategies? What is the first step? What will be our daily actions?
We could set goals to guide our actions or our goal might be our Vision. The Vision is frequently the general goal of having a supportive work environment. The goals are more specific like being a sales manager and earning $125,000 a year.
