I was in an organization that trained employees to be leaders. The camaraderie was outstanding, and we supported each other in our efforts to stand out. The challenge was to develop our personal skills to achieve in our job descriptions and then utilize our leadership training to climb the corporate ladder.
There is no downside in training employees to be leaders. Most organizations that train emphasize skills in the employees current position. This is great. But when the employees wants more growth, he often looks outside to see what is available. Indeed has 165 million resumes so the market for promotions is active.
The best strategy is creating leaders from within. It perpetuates the culture, the history, the values, the policies, and the legacy.
It also clarifies the power and politics. These can be two aspects that create dissension and back biting. When the criteria for promotion is transparent, the organization attracts engagement and enthusiasm.
Work on your own skills to be promoted. Engage in personal development practices. Learn leadership skills. Become an entrepreneurial thinker. Look for opportunities to lead projects. Network vertically for sponsorship.
Organizations are like cities. The better navigational guides provided to employees, the better chance for everyone to arrive at their destination. Everyone wants to thrive and thriving provide profits.
