The major dynamic in corporate life today is change. It comes from so many directions. Being hired or promoted to CEO means there is faith you can lead change. Change may be the need of a turn around. Change may mean the need to beat competition. Change may mean the need to adapt to technologies.
The man at the top has to set the agenda. He has to have Vision supported with specific skills, industry knowledge, the awareness of trends, and knowledge of marketing, finance, operations, and other disciplines.
How do you prime to be a CEO? First begin with Personal Development. Leaders are often followed for their soft skills. Having awareness, being mindful, showing empathy, being decisive are some of the supportive skills.
Leaders are well served if they have developed Executive Presence. This is body language, communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to convey confidence to stakeholders. Each skill can be learned.
Change requires a growth mindset and resilience to setbacks. This means a leader has courage and can recover when plans don't meet success. He has transparency, accountability, and authenticity to show he is open to feedback.
Problem solving skills are a necessity for every leader. Each day is an agenda of issues that have to be faced if you are the leader. You may be in operations, personnel, marketing, sales, finance, service, or manufacturing. Each has obstacles to move forward and needs a good plan with lots of options.
Work on the craft for which you were hired but set your sights higher. Your leadership is needed. Start volunteering for leadership roles on committees or projects to demonstrate your talents and ambitions.
