One of the important indications if your career is sustainable, is your mental state. Employees who are on the rise have excitement and enthusiasm about their opportunities to contribute. Those on the edge of burnout wake up each day dreading what they have before them.
I have been there on both sides. I had a high paying managing role that had responsibility for a big sales group and I felt each day I was dying. I was always a tick away from saying I can't do this anymore. Then one bad incident occurred and because I was already bordering on despair, I said I quit.
I had to assess my core values and decide where the boundaries had to lie. I assessed what I loved and what were the circumstances under which I could not operate optimally.
I considered that coaching has always been a central theme in the work I loved and have developed three areas of coaching that I find fulfilling and rewarding. Now it is not the money that is the prime driver, it is the rewards, my contribution, and the feedback of appreciation I receive that make my efforts sustainable.
The first thing to ask yourself in the morning is if you are looking forward to your day? Is what you are doing, you?
Are you
- Learning,
- Growing,
- Feeling recognized
- Feel supported
- Have opportunities
- Have influence
- Making a contribution
Do you feel engaged? Do you have the opportunity to share your talents, your ideas, your ambitions?
Do great work, network vertically, contribute and share your contributions, get mentors and sponsors. Reflect on your progress and be mindful during the day of your mental and emotional states. Self-preservation is the key to sustainability.
