Promotions are earned from exceeding expectations in your work, promoting your contributions, and developing a Personal Brand that the Organization supports. Getting promoted is like a career within a career. It benefits from planning.
A Personal Brand is what people might say about you when you are not in the room. You can improve your brand with Personal Development, learning Leadership Skills, developing a facility with Entrepreneurial Thinking and strong Networking.
Executive Presence is the strongest Personal Brand. It is the aura of authority and self-control. It includes communication skills, body language, decisiveness, emotional intelligence, courage, accountability, and empathy, to name a few. Human Resource Directors credit it with the fastest path upward.
Develop other skills of leadership such as Strategic Thinking and Problem Solving. Change and resistance are two common phenomena that organizations face every day. Competition, new technologies, changing trends, global trade, political and economic environments all affect our plans. We have to plan for each of them.
A growth mindset is a great tool for facing challenge. We seek it and we anticipate we will have setbacks. We have the courage to deal with adversity. We know we can improve who we are and how we show up.
Continuous Learning is the foundation of moving forward. We have to understand our organization, our industry, the trends, and then how we can best equip ourselves to engage. Leaders are readers. Some read for hours a day. Bill Gates takes off a week or two each year just to hide and read.
Have faith that if you put in the time to improve who you are and how you show up, you will become recognized.
