Promotion and Retention Skills

Promotion and Retention skills look similar and the practices to achieve both can achieve both. These are challenging times and even good companies can be threatened with change. Change often means promoting personnel and firing personnel. We can have both an offensive and defensive strategy.

We are always in states of change and organizations need leaders to fill the gaps. They must be adaptable, seek challenge, resilient, and work well with others. On the other hand, when there is change and need for different personnel, those who fill the job description but are replaceable, are more likely to get replaced.

So, standing out for either reason is important. Aspiring leaders want to develop Executive Presence, which is a command of communications, an authoritative aura, a growth mindset, emotional regulation, and strategic thinking. You want to be a relationship builder and networker.

Networking should be horizontal, vertical, and external. You want to build support from peers, your superiors, and executives from competitors and companies outside your industry.  When opportunities arise, you want to have some mindshare.

It is important to be outstanding in the work for which you were hired. It is important to build more skills for your current responsibilities but also for those skills you would need if promoted. Continuous learning is therefore crucial. Take courses, read books, get mentors, and get coached.

Personal Branding is what people may say about you when you are not in the room. Make outstanding qualities your brand like integrity, dependability, ambitious, likeable, good with pressure, decisive, accountable, innovative, and bold to name a few. Whether you are being considered for promotion or release, you want to have strong known qualities.

Start to fill leadership gaps before the title. Volunteer to lead projects, committees, problem solving sessions, and help those who have too much work. Be the "go to person". Be known for your expertise and be an influencer. Join social media.

In summary, building outstanding qualities and skills to lead your organization will also keep you employed at your organization.
