Power and Political Building for Promotions

If you want to make seeking promotions a proactive exercise, engage in power and politics. Hope and waiting is not a strategy. Only a small percentage of organizations promote on merit and good citizenship. Most look for the person with the best qualifications for an opening and may hire from outside or to those who have promoted their talents.

There are many ways to promote your talents. Start with building Executive Presence. H/R Directors say those withy EP progress fastest up the ladder. That says that those who demonstrate they have the aura and characteristics of leadership become the most eligible.

Seek Sponsorship. Having a person with authority in your corner to speak about you when opportunities arise is priceless.

Learn to write and speak clearly and authoritatively. The best training is reading. Reading provides the structure and style of clear expression and becomes mimicked by people who are well read. Most articulate speakers are well read.

Control Assets like information, budgets, and expert knowledge. If people need what you have, you have influence.

Problem solving skills are a great avenue to leadership. Organizations can advance as fast as they can overcome the obstacles of resistance. People who can support this effort become irreplaceable.

Be a risk taker. Progress requires challenges and the willingness to be accountable. Don't be afraid.

Network externally. Know your competitors and socialize with them. Friendships often occur before they ask you to join them.

Lead change. An organization's big challenge is often selling new moves to employees. Show you are adaptable and capable of moving others forward.
