The practice I would like to see changed is Organizations being proactive about training employees for promotion. It is a game that organizations would like to control so they can keep workers happily in place and decide who moves up. It is clearly about who has the power to make these decisions and how you can get it.
Every organization is about power and politics. It is not an evil thing. There is always a process for who makes the decisions and how ideas, policies, and practices get implemented. Every organizations needs leaders and workers. Which do you want to be? There are ways to acquire power without a title and a process to implement it.
First, you must be a performer. That is the best and often only way to get attention. You need to upgrade your skills. Then you have to draw attention to your talents, your contributions, and your ambitions. You need a sponsor. You need a network inside and externally. Become outspoken and an influencer. Become a specialist. These all begin the power acquisition process.
How do you prepare for your upward ascent? Courses, Mentors, Sponsors, Coaches, Relationships, and Networking. You are building momentum to get your ideas heard.
What are the areas you need to build prowess?
- Understand Power
- Develop Political Awareness
- Executive Presence
- Problem Solving
- Leadership Skills
- Entrepreneurial Thinking
These are all important to excel in the corporate environment. Your leaders understand these talents and skills. The more you also acquire them, the more you elevate yourself to their level. Even without the title.
