The Skills Promotions Require

We certainly have choices when it comes to being promoted. We can wait patiently to be recognized for our good work and citizenship, or we can make our move and take our place where we belong. We can develop the skills promoted people learn to move up while other people wait.

People who get promoted in most organizations understand power, politics, problem solving, continuous learning, networking, and volunteering. These are all practices and skills outside the job description. When we were hired, did our employer ask us to seek these skills? No. But when we were hired, did they explain what was required to get promoted? No.

Its estimated less that 30% of organizations promote on merit while their employees patiently wait. If you are especially skilled and also have the necessary skills to step up, you will attract attention for promotion. Otherwise, superiors will be grateful and offer salary increases and bonuses. That's not bad, but its not a promotion.

Promotions are moving up the authority, autonomy, and decision ladder. These are gifts for demonstrating you can help the organization adapt to change. If you focus on how the organization has to change to beat the competition, defend against startups, and adapt to disruptive technologies, you are ready to lead.

But the skills you are able to demonstrate need sponsorship. You have to get recognized. You need the platforms to demonstrate your desire to take more responsibility. You have to speak up, volunteer for visibility, create relationships with superiors for feedback and sponsorship. You have to step out of your job description into the arena of leadership.

Personal development practices are excellent for learning leadership qualities. Learning the 7 Step Formula for Solving Problems can be used at any opportunity. A willingness to take risks and be accountable is a characteristic of Executive Presence. Communication skills are a primary requirement of leadership. Emotional regulation is necessary to handle collaboration, negotiations, and conflicts.

So, you might see how the skills for promotion exceed the skills of your employee job description unless you are hired to be a leader. Learn the skills and practices. See the big picture. Get mentors, sponsors, and coaches. Make it fun.
