When we join organizations, we have the intentions of fulfilling our obligations and being treated fairly for salary, bonuses, and promotions. We learn that in many organizations, these expectations don't occur with time invested. We may become frustrated that we are not learning and getting acknowledged. We are not advancing.
In some organizations there are reviews and timely salary increases, bonuses and considerations for advancement. In most organizations, management is content to let you fulfill your duties and not rock the boat.
We may observe that some people are advancing and that they don't seem more qualified that you. They have learned to play the game. The game consists of Power, Politics, Personal Development, Executive Presence, Personal Branding, Problem Solving, Leadership Skills, Entrepreneurial Thinking and Getting Sponsored.
These are the talents and skills that help you stand out and become a player. If you want a salary, you can remain steady and unseen hoping you are not first when the layoffs come. They come from new leadership, poor sales, new technologies, and mergers. The practices for getting promoted can prevent you from being on the top of the list for layoffs.
The clients I coach start right away to change who they are and how they show up. This is the objective. We want to attract attention for our good efforts and contribution. We want our superiors to see us as a valuable member they do not want to lose. We want them to consider us when they need to fill a leadership gap. We want them to see the value in giving us more responsibility, authority, and autonomy.
When you joined, they promised a salary but maybe not a career path that leads to fulfilling your dreams. That you have to create.
